Demystifying the shark myths
Show notes
Do not believe everything the media tells you about sharks. For more than 400 million years, these animals have ruled the oceans; thriving in icy waters and tropical seas alike, from kelp forests to coral reefs. Wherever you go in the ocean, chances are a shark is not that far away.Yet, sharks are often portrayed as mindless killing machines when the truth is far more complex and far more fascinating. In this episode of GenSea, shark specialist Dr. Jenny Bortoluzzi joins us to reveal just how extraordinary these animals really are: powerful, intelligent, and surprisingly vulnerable. She explains how sharks use their six senses to navigate the ocean and hunt, how different species behave in their enviromment, how scientists can identify species simply by examining their teeth and why sharks play a critical role in maintaining the balance and health of marine ecosystems. Just as importantly, we discuss how media narratives have distorted the public’s perception of these animals. Throughout the episode, we also confront a harsh reality: despite their strength, resilience, and contrary to common belief, sharks are increasingly threatened by human activities, particularly fishing. We discuss how understanding these pressures is essential when designing effective governance and conservation strategies, especially within Marine Protected Areas. As the conversation comes to an end, we establish a fairly yet simple conclusion: an ocean without sharks is not a healthy ocean.
